Ils développèrent également des moteurs en étoile sans soupapes dont la mise en production fut stoppée par la Première Guerre Mondiale. S'échappant en Angleterre, il travailla chez Fairey jusqu'en 1931 quand il retourna en Belgique pour créer l'usine Avions Fairey. Peu de temps après, il conçu le Tipsy S, premier modèle d'une gamme de petits avions de sport qui s'achèvera avec le Nipper dans les années soixante. Le succès fut immédiat et le S.2, le B/Trainer et le M/Fairey Primer furent également construits en Angleterre. Pendant la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale, il retourna en Angleterre où il dirigea un dépôt de réparations pour l'Air Ministry avant de retourner chez Fairey comme Chief Experimental and Research Engineer. Après reconstruction de l'usine « Avions Fairey » à la fin de la guerre, il créa le Junior, le Belfair et le Nipper qui fera connaître le nom Tipsy dans le monde entier. De nos jours, Avions Fairey existe toujours sous le nom de SONACA et les avions Tipsy sont toujours très appréciés. De nombreux exemplaires volent encore et le Nipper est toujours en production grâce aux constructeurs amateurs.

L’auteur. Vincent s’intéresse aux avions civils belges depuis plus de 20 ans avec un grand intérêt pour les avions conçus par E.O. Tips. Il est également volontaire au sein du Musée Royal de l’Armée ou il a mené plusieurs projets de restauration dont ceux des Tipsy Trainer G-AFRV et Belfair G-AFJR. Il est propriétaire d’un Tipsy Junior. Le layout du livre a été realisé par Nicolas Godfurnon déjà l’auteur de celui du livre Renard R36/R37/R38 & 40 qui a connu un grand succés. _____O_____
Ernest-Oscar Tips began working on airplanes in 1908 when, with his brother Maurice, they built a tricycle welded biplane fitted with reversible propellers. They also developed valveless rotary engines whose production was cancelled by the outbreak of WWI. He then escaped in England where he worked for Fairey till the 30's before returning to Belgium to establish "Avions Fairey". A bit later, he designed the Tipsy S, the first model of a range of little sports airplanes that ended with the Nipper in the sixties. Success was immediate and the S.2, the B/Trainer, the M/Fairey Primer were also produced in England. During WWII, he went back to England where he managed an Air Ministry repair depot before returning to Fairey to become Chief Experimental and Research Engineer. After rebuilding " Avions Fairey" plant at the end of the war, he then designed the Junior, the Belfair and the Nipper that definitely established the Tipsy name worldwide.
Avions Fairey currently exists under the name SONACA and Tipsy airplanes are still much appreciated. Many are airworthy and the Nipper is still in production with homebuilders.

The author. Vincent is researching the history of Belgian civil aircraft since more of 20 years with a great interest in the aircraft designed by E.O. Tips. As a volunteer at the Royal Army Museum in Brussels, he managed numerous restoration projects including the Tipsy Trainer G-AFRV and the Belfair G-AFJR. He own a Tipsy Junior. The layout of the book was produced by Nicolas Godfurnon who already designed the successful book Renard R36/R37/R38 & 40
